Piano moving questions, answered

How much does it cost to move a piano in the UK?

Most UK piano moves cost between £180 and £650. An upright piano moved locally typically costs £180–£350, while a grand piano usually costs £300–£900 depending on size, access and distance. Stairs, crane access and long-distance mileage are the three factors that change the price the most.

Why can't a normal removals company move my piano?

An upright piano weighs 180–350kg and a concert grand can exceed 500kg, with almost all of that weight concentrated high and toward the back. Standard removal crews rarely carry piano skids, toe-jacks or the training to control that weight on stairs, which is where most damage and injuries occur.

Do you dismantle grand pianos before moving them?

Yes. Grand and baby grand pianos are lowered onto a padded skid board, the lyre and legs are removed, and the case is wrapped before being trolleyed to the vehicle. The piano is rebuilt and levelled in position at the destination.

Is my piano insured while it is being moved?

Every move is covered by Goods in Transit and Public Liability insurance up to £10m. Higher-value instruments can be declared in advance so cover matches the replacement value of the piano.

Will my piano need tuning after the move?

Almost always. Movement and a change in humidity unsettle the string tension. Let the piano acclimatise in its new room for two to four weeks, then book a tuner for the best long-term stability.

Can you move a piano into an upstairs flat?

Yes. Uprights are walked up stairs on straps by a trained crew. Where a stairwell is too narrow or turns too tightly, we survey the property and arrange window or balcony hoist access instead.
